The drama unfolded at the Severalls Lane Bridge between junctions 29 at the Ardleigh interchange and 28 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium at around 5.40pm today.

Officers rushed to the scene after receiving numerous reports from concerned members of the public who spotted the woman on the bridge.

“A woman in her 30s jumped from the bridge while police were putting up a road block but missed the A12 and landed on a grass embankment next to the A12,” an Essex Police spokesman said.

“Officers quickly attended and requested back up from the ambulance service.

“She was taken to Colchester General Hospital with ankle injuries. She was conscious and breathing.”

The force spokesman said traffic on the A12 was largely unaffected and a cordon did not have to be set up.

He said a total of five police cars attended the incident and officers had left the scene by 7.05pm.
