Nick Blackwell, 31, will be pounding the streets on May 25 for the Sick Children’s Trust.

Daughter Lilly was in and out of hospital aged just one with flu-like symptoms, before being rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, in late August 2013 when her condition deteriorated.

She was diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a condition where the immune system is overstimulated and potentially damages other tissues and organs. She spent weeks in the hospital before finally going home in October.

During the six week ordeal parents Nick and Clare were able to stay close by in Acorn House, a “Home from Home” provided by the charity.

Mr Blackwell said: “Acorn House was a life-saver. It enabled us to be by Lilly’s side throughout and saved us from commuting from home daily.

“We were terrified. Lilly was on a life-support machine for over a week and during this time especially we couldn’t imagine being anywhere else but by her side.

“Being able to stay in free accommodation just minutes away was invaluable.

“The support we received from Acorn House was fantastic too and I have chosen to fundraise for the charity because I don’t know what we would have done without it.”

Lilly has recovered well and is now busy running round after her new little brother, Joseph, who was born just three weeks ago.

Nick will be running with his brother Adam, sister Louise and her partner Scott and together the team have already raised more than £3,000.
