Police have arrested a 27-year-old Colchester man in connection with their investigation into the murder of James Attfield.

Mr Attfield was found seriously injured with more than 100 stab wounds in Castle Park, off Guildford Road, shortly before 6am on Saturday March 29. He died a short time later at the scene.

Officers are still piecing together the 33-year-old student’s movements between 10pm on Friday March 28, when he left the River Lodge Public House, and the time when he was found injured.

The arrested 27-year-old has been taken to a police station for questioning.

Officers have also executed search warrants at two addresses in Colchester as part of their continuing enquiries.

Police are still appealing for people to come forward who were pictured on CCTV walking through Lower Castle Park late on Friday March 28 and in the early hours of Saturday March 29.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Werrett said: “Two of the people featured in the CCTV images we have released have come forward and have been spoken to and eliminated from our enquiries.

“That still leaves 21 people who we need to speak with and who may hold important information in relation to our investigation.

“In particular we are keen to gather further information about the group of three people in images 5 and 5a. I would like to hear from anyone who saw this trio at any time during the evening but in particular between midnight and 2.15am.

“I would also repeat our appeal for anyone with information about James’ death to contact the enquiry team at Colchester police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“It is offering a reward of £5,000 for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person, or persons, responsible.”

Police are also still trying to trace a couple who were seen sitting on a bench in Lower Castle Park close to the lake at around 11.30pm to 11.40pm on Friday March 28. The man is described as white, of stocky build, and seemed tall with long legs. The only description of the woman is that she was white.

They were sitting at opposite ends of the bench and it is not certain if they knew each other, although they may have been a couple who had had a row earlier in the evening and were sitting apart not talking to each other.

About 10 metres away from where this couple were sat there was also a man sat on the grass who was white, aged 30 to 40 and wearing a dark jacket and possibly jeans. This may, or may not, have been Mr Attfield.

They are also attempting to identify three people depicted in e-fits.

A 27-year-old woman from Colchester was arrested on Friday, April 11 in connection with Mr Attfield’s death and is currently on police bail until Thursday, April 24 pending further enquiries.

There was a heavy police presence this morning in Hunting Gate, just off Greenstead Road.

A spokesman for Essex Police confirmed they had “executed a search warrant at an address in Colchester”.

He added that it was “in connection with the continuing investigation into the murder of James Attfield”.

At the time there was no confirmation whether any arrests had been made or property seized during the search.
