Medals stolen in burglary

Police are trying to trace a set of distinctive medals, including several decorations for services in two world war’s and an MBE medal, which were stolen from a home in Essex.

Burglars broke into a house in Old Heath Road, Colchester, at some point between April 12 and 19.

The stolen items included First World War medals in the name of Harry George Smith, of the Essex Regiment, and the South African Campaign Medal from the Boer War. The medals were set on an extended bar.

An MBE medal, in a black presentation box and in the same name, presented in 1946 by King George VI for Mr Smith’s work in the Home Guard during the Second World War, was also stolen, along with First World War campaign medals issued to Horace Boat and a black Kawasaki motorbike - registration beginning AY06.

Anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area, knows who is responsible, or is offered the medals or bike to buy, is urged to contact investigating officer Dc Duncan Collyer at Colchester CID on 101, or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The air ambulance was called to the A12 at the Wangford bypass at around 5.40pm following reports that a woman had been injured in a car crash involving two vehicles.

Firefighters discovered a small fire which had occurred in the lagging attatched to a vessel at International Flavors and Fragrances in Duddery Hill, Haverhill, at around 6.17pm today.
