A new Woodland Creation Grant has opened for applications.

The Countryside Stewardship scheme helps land managers reap the environmental and financial benefits of woodland creation with two-year capital grants of up to £6,800 per hectare, and the chance to apply for annual maintenance payments for 10 years.

Environment minister Thérèse Coffey said planting trees helped the environment in a number of ways.

“They provide a haven for wildlife, reduce flood risk and improve water quality – making them some of our most cherished assets,” she said.

Richard Greenhous, forest services director for the Forestry Commission, said planting trees on your land could also offer an alternative source of income, with local woodland officers providing advice and support throughout the application process. Landowners can also apply for a Woodland Creation Planning Grant.
