A teenager killed in a road accident in Sudbury was driving above the speed limit and too close to the car in front when he lost control of his modified vehicle, an inquest has heard.

Ryan Noakes, of Cats Lane, Sudbury, was just 18 when he died at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, on April 22 this year - 13 days after the single-vehicle crash on the A134 Springlands Way.

The inquest, which was held in Bury St Edmunds today, heard Ryan had made modifications to his black Vauxhall Astra including removing a fuse which had disabled the anti-lock braking (ABS) system.

Pc Andy Fossey, forensic collision investigator, said due to the ABS system being disabled the rear wheels of the Astra locked up as Ryan braked heavily to avoid hitting the BMW in front, driven by his friend Thomas Hinds.

Pc Fossey said there was no suggestion the two friends were racing each other, as they headed in the direction of Long Melford, “however the evidence would suggest there may have been some degree of competitive driving”.

Ryan, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle as it collided with the post of a roundabout sign. He died from head and chest injuries.

Pc Fossey said: “It is my considered opinion that the most plausible explanation for this collision is that Mr Noakes was a young, relatively inexperienced driver.

“He failed to anticipate or recognise the risks of driving in excess of the speed limit, too close to the vehicle in front and with a disabled ABS system.”

Assistant coroner Dr Dan Sharpstone said: “My conclusion is Ryan Noakes died of a road traffic collision.”

Heavy rain and flooding has caused delays on the road and rail networks across Suffolk this morning, after more than a months worth of rain fell in four hours.

The Suffolk Show of 2014 is remembered for the visit of Prince Harry, not the rain on the day before the show.

Paul Geater has been a regular visitor to the Suffolk Show over many decades – and will be back there again as part of our coverage on both days of the event. He has no worries about the weather this year, despite Tuesday’s rain.

The rain may have stopped but the skies over Suffolk are grey and threatening, and your plans for the day have now fallen flat.
