FELIXSTOWE: A headteacher today expressed her dismay after a mosaic made by primary school pupils was irreversibly damaged.
An original mosaic depicting a train coming into its station, on display outside Felixstowe rail station, has lost nearly half its tiles, exposing the board underneath.
It is not known whether the damage was down to vandalism or simple wear and tear.
The mosaic was designed and created by Langer Primary School pupils in 2005.
Headteacher Catherine Banthorp said: “I’m really sad because I know the children loved being involved in a project with a local artist, Rosemary Humphries, at the time.
“The children had a lovely time doing it because it was all their own design, and it was great for people getting off the train to see work by a local school.
“It would be a shame if it was deliberate, but I suppose once a couple of tiles come off, it is tempting for people to pick at them.”
The previous artwork, on display from around 1995 until 2005, was also by Langer Primary School pupils, and Mrs Banthorp said the school would be happy to get involved if a replacement piece is commissioned.

Why ask "are vandals plaguing your community?"? Why not ask readers if a lack of maintenance is plaguing their community, or at least, causing their mosaics to lose some tiles. Given that the story itself states "It is not known whether the damage was down to vandalism or simple wear and tear" it's not only leading, but also misleading to load the solicitation for comments in such a one-sided, ham-fisted, manner. A well-placed blob of Araldite and a smattering of journalistic integrity could have saved both the mosaic and the story!
