Police were called to the student union tonight following reports that masked men tried to steal a cash machine.

It is believed that two men have been arrested. It has been reported that two men in masks and overalls were armed with crowbars. The robbers crashed a car as they attempted to flee the scene, it is understood.

The incident happened outside the Hive bar in Union House at about 8.30pm.

A spokesman from the Norfolk Police control room confirmed that there had been an incident at the UEA and there had been two arrests.

A statement on the Union UEA Students twitter page said: “We can confirm an incident in Union House tonight. Police on the scene within a couple of minutes, four people in custody, no-one hurt.”

According to one eyewitness, at least two would-be robbers, wearing “masks and overalls” and armed with crowbars “smashed the door with a car”, and attempted to steal the Hive cash machine.

According to the same eyewitness, two robbers were apprehended by police at the scene.

One police car is also reported to have been damaged in pursuit of the criminals.

Concrete, the UEA student newspaper tweeted just after 9pm: “masked men have stolen the cash machine from the Hive. Two arrests have been made.”
