DON’T get caught up in the hype of the sales, it is only a bargain if you really need - this is the advice from money saving expert Dan Hill.

More tips from readers

•Turn heating off and wear a jumper

• Walk to shops instead of driving

• Turn off appliances and lights when you go to bed

• Buy LED light bulbs for areas of home that don’t need to be brightly lit

• Don’t overfill kettle

• Use basket in supermarket, not trolley

The TV presenter was impressed with the thrifty tips readers have been sharing online and through our social media pages, and got in touch to add his own frugal offerings.

On being a smarter sale shopper, he said: “There are good deals out there at this time of year but people do get confused, they see 50% off or even 75% and they get caught in the trap of buying items they don’t need.

“It might be the wrong size but people think seen a it is reduced they should buy it, but if it were full price they would say ‘it is too baggy’ or ‘too tight’ and leave it.

“Remember, it is only a bargain if you need it.”

Dan, who has a home in Essex, also advises people to shop around.

“We are in a very deep recession still and the consumer is in a strong position, you can negotiate on price.

“If you are going to a restaurant and there are more than six of you, speak to the owner first and ask for a discount. Most of the time they give me a free bottle of wine rather than money off but you can’t complain at that.

“The best deals are usually to be had in independent shops and restaurants. They may not always be cheapest when you look at their prices but they have more flexibility on prices.

“If it is the end of the season they need to shift their stock. The big stores also need to sell their clothes but they have more money in reserve so it is not as important.

“Most people are embarassed to try and get a deal but cash is king and if you have the spondoolies it is worth asking.”

Readers have been sharing their tips for cutting down shopping bills and reducing food waste, and Dan added his own.

“We can cut down so much by just buying what we need, plan your meals before you go shopping.”
