Two people had to be airlifted to safety after their speedboat ran aground a mile off the coast of East Mersea this evening.
A vessel from Mersea Coastguard and the Clacton RNLI lifeboat were sent to rescue the pair - believed to be two men - after an emergency call was received around 7pm.
A spokesman for Thames Coastguard reported the men had no anchor and only one life jacket between them, He said there was no VHF radio on the boat and that the men had called for help using a mobile phone.
Because of failing light, the RAF rescue helicopter from Wattisham was eventually scrambled to recsue the men, who were picked up and safely landed at Point Clear near Clacton around 8.50pm
