Drivers were faced with difficult conditions today as flash floods struck parts of east Suffolk.

Forecasters Weatherquest said they had received reports of around two inches of rain falling in fierce downpours over a short period in the Woodbridge, Framlingham and Saxmundham areas.

The conditions were very isolated with communities just a few miles apart missing the heavy rain completely.

In Penzance Road, Kesgrave, part of the road was flooded all the way across. Residents said the road or drains seemed to have problems coping with sudden downpours and now flooded regularly.

There were tailbacks on some roads in the area where cars slowed to get through water.

A police spokesman said some roads had suffered problems but the flooding had dispersed quickly in most after the rain stopped. The main routes had remained clear.

He said: “It was the usual problems in the usual places – nothing that we are not used to now after the instances of the past few months.”

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said with the heavy rain expected at the weekend it was anticipated some roads may flood.

Drivers were warned not to drive through flash flooding as there may be unexpected holes in the road surface, and people should also not walk in floodwater above knee level as it can knock you off your feet and the water could be covering open manholes, roadworks or other objects.

  • We currently have a priority one County Council investigation going on in Terry Gardens, Kesgrave after flooding 2 months ago and we were flooded again last night. The soakaway for Grange Farm appears to have ceased to function. The situation across Kesgrave with respect to flooding is unacceptable and has been this way for some time but, thus far, little action from the district council.

  • Good old "we think we aren't Ipswich" Kesgrave. Perhaps suffolk coastal council will eventually sort the drainage. This has occured for years and years.
