Suffolk’s superstar singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has been awarded a Brit Award for ‘Global Success’.

Presented by Rolling Stone, Ronnie Wood, who said he was a ‘prolific songwriter’ who is ‘doing England proud’.

Wood said: “Just by being himself, he has won our hearts and sold millions of records.”

Before the presentation, Ed also was praised by superstar Elton John, who said: “The first time I heard him, I knew he’d be a huge success.”

Earlier in the evening, Ed narrowly missed out on winning ‘Best Male’ and ‘Best British Single’.

Accepting the award, Ed said: “The global success really comes from all the record labels and people who work so hard all over the world.”

He dedicated the award to ‘Gabby’, who works for Warner Bros Music.

At the star-studded awards ceremony at London’s O2, the much-loved redhead, who attended Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham, performed his song Supermarket Flowers to rapturous applause.

However despite being nominated for a string of gongs, his bestselling single, Shape of You was pipped at the post by Rag ‘n’ Bone Man’s Human, while the accolade for Best Male went to Stormzy. Sheeran’s album ‘Divide’ was nominated for the Mastercard British Album of the year, and he was also up for Best Video, which was decided by a public text-in vote.

His arrival at the glittering ceremony fanned the flames of speculation that her had recently married in secret, after eagle eyed attendees noticed he was wearing a ring on his wedding finger.
