Eight fans were arrested by police after trouble broke out among a small group of football supporters at the end of the East Anglian derby at Portman Road in Ipswich.

Police said “a small amount of low level disorder” happened as fans left the ground at the end of the match, and they dealt with further disorder that broke out among a group of supporters outside the railway station.

A police spokeswoman said that because a number of objects were thrown between groups of fans, specialist officers wearing protective equipment were deployed to the incident outside the station. They were joined by other officers with police horses and police dogs who were also at the scene.

Eight people were arrested by Suffolk Police in total, during the course of match and at the station afterwards. Six of these were taken into custody, where they were being questioned for disorder related offences.

British Transport Police tweeted that Ipswich station had to be evacuated at one point because a flare was released in the station as fans were passing through.

A Greater Anglia spokesman said two people, believed to be Norwich City fans, had set off a smokebomb in the entrance to the station concourse as people started to arrive at the station for the match at about 10am.

The smokebomb was kicked into the open forecourt of the station for the smoke to safely disperse and the concourse was evacuated for about five minutes while the smoke there cleared. There was little disruption to trains or the operation of the station, he added.
