Election 2014: European election count due to start

PUBLISHED: 15:54 25 May 2014 | UPDATED: 19:31 25 May 2014

Counting is due to start for the European elections.

Counting is due to start for the European elections.

Counting of votes in the European election is due to start at 5pm across the country – but the first results will not be declared until the polls in the rest of Europe have closed at 10pm.

The turnout across the region was down on the last European Parliament election at just 36.2% – a 1.5% drop on 2009. In 2009 the Conservatives won three MEPs in the East of England, UKIP won two, with Labour and the LibDems claiming one each.

A national poll has predicted that UKIP will win the European elections and the LibDems will be left back in fifth place.

The prediction, based on a poll of 6,124 adults over the last two days by YouGov for The Sun, is that Nigel Farage’s party will gain most votes with 27%, despite him being involved in a number of controversies in the lead up to election day.

Labour is projected to come second with 26%, the Tories third with 22% of the vote, followed by the Greens on 10% and the LibDems with 9%.

The poll suggests that UKIP and Labour will both have 22 MEPs, an increase of nine each on the last elections in 2009.

The Conservatives are expected to get 16 of the 70 European Parliament seats being voted on in England, Scotland and Wales, 10 fewer than before, while the Greens will get four – an increase of two.

The LibDems are expected to lose eight, leaving them with just three MEPs, while the far-right BNP will lose both its MEPs, the poll predicts.

We shall be covering the count as it unfolds from 9pm on this website. We hope results will be declared between 10pm and 11pm, but we could have to wait until the early hours of Monday morning for the full results.

  • It does not matter which politician or party gets in power, this EU project will not bring hardly any prosperity for 90% of the people of Europe including the UK (indeed economic decline has been the case for nearly 10-years now in real terms taking inflation into account - basically has been going the same way as Japan with 20-years of economic stagnation), but just for the 10% rich as usual (that's why the politicians are leading us down the garden path as the servants of the mighty corporations). Indeed the cost to the EU taxpayer is astronomical and where every one of the 751 MEPs can receive €615,660 a year and look forward to a lump sum pension pot of €303,195. That's times 751 of course and where it is a mere drop in the ocean of the total cost of the EU. Some main-stream media outlets have said incredibly up 1000 billion Euro a year and where 'Translation' cost alone are pushing €1.5 billion a year. But a recent report by Civitas - The Institute For The Study Of Civil Society, stated that 'trade' between the UK and EU countries had not changed percentage wise since 1973, so what's the point for all this vast European taxpayer's investment when it has not given any extra back to the wealth of the people? Also the NHS is definitely under threat from the private US healthcare industry if the EU-USA trade pact is signed up to by our politicians. A great deal of people do not know this. So enjoy the NHS for as long as you can, but where privatisation is definitely knocking on the door now with this so-called 'free-trade' agreement to be signed by our politicians. http:worldinnovationfoundation.blogspot.co.uk201405the-european-union-eu-is-heading.html

  • We need to leave Europe... so we went to the polls on Thursday (or postal vote in advance) but they cannot be counted until 5pm on the Sunday (today) and cannot be announced until 10pm? Reason being that not all other nations have voted? What different does it make? Completely pathetic. Some people have problems with the lottery closing some time before the draw.... how does anyone know that the election results haven't been fixed? Look on the bright side the European elections mean nothing - the MEPs do very little - so no one cares.

  • Well you clearly can't speak for the entire British population. Get your head in the 21st century and think what would be mutually beneficial for all not just your selfish traditionalist views

  • Come on UKIP. Let's get those doors closed, and let's get this country off it's knees and back on its feet. Good luck party that says what we truly think.
