Police in Essex have issued an e-fit of a man connected to a scam which has netted thieves more than £27,000.

Mainly elderly people have been contacted by scammers pretending to be officers from Essex or the Metropolitan Police who ask for their bank details.

The victims are told they need to withdraw a large amount of money for the ‘police’ to examine as evidence in a made-up investigation. A courier is then sent to pick up the cash.

The e-fit released today is of the courier involved in one scam carried out in Maldon on April 18, when £1,800 was stolen.

The man is thought to be about 25 years old and wore black clothing. Anyone who recognises him should call the Operation Seaford team at Essex Police on 101.

The force has also issued advice to the public to help protect them against further scam attempts.

They have reminded people they will never be called by police or bank officials for your full bank details and they would not ask you to withdraw large sums of cash.

If you think you have been a victim of a scam, or one is in progress, call the police from a different number. This is because the criminals often keep the line open by not hanging up so they can impersonate other people.

If you do not have another phone you should wait at least five minutes before calling the police, or alternatively use a neighbour’s phone.

The man arrested by police over a suspected murder in Bury St Edmunds on Thursday has been charged this evening.

Two junctions on the A12 near Kelvedon in Essex will be closed for three nights this week as bridge repair works continue.

Firefighters have been called to tackle a pile of wood and barn alight at a farm in Harleston this evening.

One of the biggest dates in Felixstowe’s summer calendar of events got off to a sun drenched start on the seaside this afternoon.

It’s the start of the school summer holidays, six weeks that are a time of both joy and pain for parents across the nation, Sheena Grant writes.
