Firefighters in Essex have highlighted the dangers of starting outdoor fires after seven were reported in less than three hours across the county.

Crews attended small fires in Colchester, Brightlingsea, Basildon, Rochford, Rayleigh, Wickford and Orsett between 6pm and 8.45pm this evening.

A spokesman for Essex Fire Service said: “Deliberate fires like this endanger lives, not only the fire itself but also in taking up the time of fire crews who might otherwise be needed elsewhere.

“It is extremely irresponsible to start fires like this and we urge anyone heading outside to enjoy the good weather this weekend to make sure they are fire safe and do not start any wildfires.”

Visitors to the countryside are advised never to throw cigarette butts out of car windows or leave glass bottles in woodland - as sun shining through can start a fire.

Anyone who sees a fire in the countryside is urged to call 999 immediately.

People using barbecues are advised to follow instructions, never leave them unattended and keep fires well away from sheds, fences, shrubs or garden waste.

Children, pets and garden games should be kept clear from cooking areas.

The region’s ambulance service has more than doubled its spend on private ambulances in just one year, new figures reveal.

Police are appealing for information following a serious crash in Great Notley.

Officers are appealing for witnesses following a road traffic collision between a car and cyclist on the A133, Little Clacton by-pass.

A call handler from the region’s ambulance service has been shortlisted for a national award.

An unsung hero from Bury St Edmunds who works tirelessly for her community has been recognised with a special award.

A Suffolk school has been crowned as one of the top five preparatory schools in the country at a national ceremony.

A new venue has been chosen for an annual baby remembrance service held in Colchester.
