Coastguard officers faced a busy afternoon of call-outs along the Essex coast today after receiving four emergency requests for assistance.

A concerned member of the public reported a wind surer in difficulty off East Mersea just after 2pm.

West Mersea RNLI and Mesea Coastguard assisted the man to shore, where he was deemed fit and well and not requiring medical assistance.

The crew on board a yacht named Aurora were next to call for Coastguard assistance after suffering engine failure off Walton on the Naze.

Harwich RNLI was tasked to recover the vessel at about 3.30pm and took it back to Shotley Marina where it was assisted by the Holbrook Coastguard Rescue Team.

Another yacht, which appeared to be in difficulty near Mersea Quarters, prompted a lifeboat launch for the Mersea Coastguard Team shortly before 5pm. Upon arrival, however, it emerged the vessel was safe and did not need assistance.

Reports of three people stuck in the mud at Fen Farm Mersea Island were also made to the Coastguard shortly after 6pm.

West Mersea RNLI attended to find a man and two children had freed themselves from the mud. Once ashore the crew checked they were safe and provided safety advice.
