A police officer has been arrested in connection with an investigation into an allegation of a sexual offence.

The man has been suspended from his post, Essex Police said.

In a statement, the force said: “On Thursday May the eighth Essex Police arrested a man in connection with an investigation into an allegation of a sexual offence.”

A spokesman added: “I can confirm that that man is a police officer. And I can also confirm that that officer has been suspended from his post pending the outcome of the investigation.”

The police spokesman would not say whether or not the alleged sexual offence involved a minor.

He also said it is not Essex Police policy to confirm the names of suspects who have not been charged with an offence.

Nobody else has been arrested in connection with the investigation and it is an “ongoing inquiry”, the spokesman said.
