Work to build a 60-bedroom care home in a Suffolk town could start at the end of next month, those behind the plans have said.

Developers Care UK have now met all but one of the conditions relating to its proposals for Hartismere Health and Care Centre, which was formerly Hartismere Hospital, at Eye.

The plans, which also include a wellbeing centre, were given the go-ahead by Mid Suffolk District Council at the end of last year.

All but one of the conditions have now been met, meaning that the developers can start work on the site when they are ready. The final condition, the provision of fire hydrants, must be met before work goes above slab level, to ensure there are appropriate fire protection measures.

The home, managed by Care UK, will be built by the healthcare provider’s development partner Castleoak.

The new care home will directly address Suffolk County Council’s vision for more purpose-built facilities for specialist older people’s care.

Care UK took over the council’s 16 former care homes and eight wellbeing centres in December 2012, with the plan to replace all of these homes, which date mainly from the 1960s and 1970s, by 2016.

The sites which are no longer needed will be returned to the council.

Chris Hopkinson, regional operations director, Care UK, said: “We are delighted that our new care home and wellbeing centre development has been granted approval by Mid Suffolk District Council.

“A new state of the art care home will accommodate up to 60 residents and will include a day club for use by older people living in their own homes in the community. The new development will be a part of a community health village in Eye.

“The development is part of a £60million project to increase the provision of better quality older people’s care in the county.

“Our construction partner for our 10 new care homes to be built across Suffolk is Castleoak, who work specifically within the care sector.

“A provisional construction start date has been set for late May early June and we look forward to welcoming the first residents and wellbeing centre customers when the development opens in summer 2015.”
