Revised proposals for a £200million power station are “unacceptable” and will be detrimental to the Suffolk countryside, a campaign group claims.

Progress Power has put forward revisions to its plan to build a gas-fired station on Eye Airfield.

But the group Common Concern, claims the changes are “unacceptable” and would harm the countryside.

The specific changes centre on an electrical sub-station which is needed to transfer the power generated to the National Grid.

Chris McKerrow, project director for the firm, said “extensive” landscaping would “minimise” the visual impact of the sub-station, which would be the size of around three football pitches.

Hilary Butler from Common Concern claimed the area already had enough energy infrastructure. She said: “We have the chicken power station and four turbines, each at 130 metres high on Eye Airfield and now we have the prospect of this power station. The Mendlesham biomass burner is going to appeal which is a few miles down the road.

“There’s the energy-from-waste incinerator at Great Blakenham. There’s a culminating impact of everything that’s going on in this part of the world.”

Progress Power has said the revised plans had been produced after “widespread” consultation.

Last year it confirmed underground cabling would be used to transport the power from the plant to the substation, instead of pylons.

The height of the chimneys at the station have also been reduced – from 90 metres to no more than 30.

A new junction would be built for construction vehicles to access the substation from the A140.

The Government is expected to make a decision on the plans, when they are submitted, in 2015.
