MEMORIES of a musical duo came flooding back when Stephen Foster spotted a Flashback photo of 70s group Love Affair.
they played in Stowmarket in January 1977 and we wanted to find out more about the gig.
Mr Foster, of BBC Radio Suffolk, said: “I can’t tell you anything about where they might have played in Stowmarket but I do recognise two members of the band.
“Second from the left is drummer Kevin Morris and behind him is bassist Phil Mitchell. Seven years later they linked up with Lee Brilleaux in Dr Feelgood and are now the longest serving members in that band’s history.
“Kevin and Phil, both Southend lads, have played with Dr Feelgood in Ipswich on numerous occasions at places like the old Suffolk College, The Corn Exchange, Christchurch Park and The Manor Ballroom.
“I will ensure they see the photo to remind them of what was probably their first visit to Suffolk.”
Adding his memories, John Hessenthaler, said: “ You were asking for information 1 in regards the picture of The Love Affair at Stowmarket in January 1977.
“I, in fact, put this concert on at Stowmarket Leisure Centre along with a number of other ‘name’ Saturday night concerts around that time.”
Jenny Cardwell, OBE, of Walberswick has helped identify members of the Eastern Counties hockey team, who were photographed training in Bury St Edmunds, in January 1980.
She said: “Annie Gallagher (Suffolk), Maggie Lintner (Essex), Rosie Sykes (Kent), Sue Lee (Kent), Denise Wayman (Suffolk), Sue Chandler (Kent), Helen Bray (Suffolk), Vicky Dixon (Cambs), Val Robinson (Herts), Judy Belchamber (Essex), Steph Garner (Essex), Mary Neville (Lincs), Julie Cook (Suffolk), Sandra Bull (Suffolk), Pru Carter (Essex), Brenda Howe (Essex), Janet Juriscka (Kent), Jenny Cardwell (Suffolk).
“Hopefully other people will write in or email the gaps I have left and identify them.”
Flashback reader Robert Lightfoot remembers the fatstock sale held in Campsea Ash in December 1984.
“My colleague Mr John Coleman - the first class wholesale butcher in Boxted - who was at the sale, supplies the following detail.
“Holding the cup is Richard Birch, his father is on the left and his son between them. Holding the bullock’s head is Derek Thorpe from Boxted. The Birch family are from Elm Tree Farm, Grundisburgh.
“Given the absence of others around the pen, the photo was probably taken before the beast was sold.”
Jacky Thorpe also recognised the photo being taken and said: “The gentleman by the animal’s head on the right-hand side of the picture is my late husband Derek Thorpe.
He used to be a butcher in Boxted where they used to rear cattle. He was also a judge at local shows which is what I assume he was doing in this picture.”
A reader who spotted her daughter standing alongside Olympian Fatima Whitbread has been in touch.
“The photograph shows my daughter Kerry and her friend Nadine. Kerry can remember going to see Fatima but not what the occasion was,” said Judy Sore.
“I often look at these photos wondering if one day the photo of Kerry and her cousin Zoe will be printed. The photo was taken of Kerry and Zoe presenting a cheque to Bill Treacher towards the fund for the first CT scanner at West Suffolk Hospital.
“They held a bring and buy sale in the back garden to raise the money and, as far as I can remember, it would have been in 1987/88.”
Meanwhile, Jane Williams has written to say: “I can confirm that the photo of a hunting scene taken at Hawkedon Green in January 1977 is of the two Joint Masters of the Suffolk Hunt at that time. On the left it is Mrs Cherry Barclay and on the right Mr Paul Rackham riding a horse named Streaker.”
Patricia Drake shared these memories and said: “I can tell you the two Masters are Mrs David Barclay (Cherry) from Higham, Nr Bury St Edmunds and Paul Rackham who now lives at Bridgham.”
The retiring postman from Belchamp St Paul has been identified as Victor Simpson
“He was well thought of whatever round he was on. Also a talented musician and craftsman. Sadly he has passed away,” said Ken Whittle.
