Essex author Kate Worsley has a signing session in Ipswich next weekend – and is bringing a team of shanty singers with her! For good measure, we’ve got five signed copies of her debut novel to give away, courtesy of publisher Bloomsbury.
She Rises, featured in the EADT earlier this year, is a tale of drunken sailors, press gangs and smugglers. At its heart, though, is a love story set in 1740.
Louise Fletcher, a young dairymaid on an Essex farm, has been warned about the lure of the sea for as long as she can remember. It stole her father and brother.
However, she is offered work in the bustling port of Harwich, as maid to a wealthy captain’s daughter – the haughty Rebecca – and leaps at the chance to see more of the world.
Meanwhile, 15-year-old Luke is drinking in a Harwich tavern when it is raided by the navy. He’s press-ganged and sent to sea on board the warship Essex. Life is brutal and dangerous.
Louise gets to grip with life in and around the streets and crooked alleys of Harwich, where fine houses concealing smugglers’ tunnels are flooded by spring tides. Luke, aching for the girl he left behind and determined to one day find his way back to her, embarks on a perilous journey.
Former journalist Kate, who lives on the Essex coast, gained an MA in creative writing from City University London. Book-signing session
She has a signing session at Waterstones, in Ipswich Buttermarket, from 11am to 2pm on Saturday, December 14. (Further details: 01473 289044.)
Joining her at some stage during the session will be members of the Naze Shanty Crew from Walton-on-the-Naze, which runs the Harwich International Shanty Festival each October.
It was through attending the festival that Kate was inspired to write her book, and the group is therefore thrilled to be able to support her signing event. Win one of five copies
We have five copies of She Rises (rrp £12.99) to give away. Simply send a postcard or sealed-down envelope with your name, address and phone number to Steven Russell, Features department, East Anglian Daily Times, 30 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich, IP4 1AN, by first post on Thursday, December 12. After the closing date, five winners will be drawn at random and notified as soon as possible.
Alternatively, email your details to firstname.lastname@example.org – typing “she rises” in the subject line.
Kate would be very happy to meet winners at the December 14 signing event, and present them with their copies. Alternatively, books can be posted to home addresses.
