Steadfastly displaying loyalty to her husband, Deborah Brett today described “Fast” Eddie Maher as “awesome”.

The 56-year-old former security guard, who is wanted for questioning over the disappearance of
£1million in Felixstowe in 1993, is currently remanded in Greene County jail, Missouri, awaiting his next court hearing.

However, Ms Brett is determinedly standing by her man.

The 46-year-old also gave a glimpse of the strain their family has been under since the US authorities detained Maher, Ms Brett and their younger son Mark, 14, at their rented home in Ozark, Missouri, last Wednesday.

Speaking from the family home Ms Brett said: “It’s extremely
difficult. Mike is awesome. He
is a wonderful father and a
wonderful husband.”

Ms Brett then declined to speak further, and ended the interview.

Reports from America have said the family will continue to support Maher and return to England if he is extradited.

Meanwhile, further snapshots
of the financial woes which overwhelmed Maher during his 19 years in the US emerged today.

The former Securicor guard,
who lived in Missouri under his brother’s name of Michael Maher, appeared to be virtually penniless.

Amanda Zignego, who is the mother of two of Maher’s grandchildren, said Ms Brett – who she knew as Sarah King, told her the family were in desperate straits.

Ms Zignego, 22, from Hartford, Wisconsin, said: “One time when we were alone in the car she was telling me her husband used to make 80,000 dollars (a year). They had sunk all their money into a retirement fund. She told me when the stock market crashed over here they lost everything.

“She seemed upset and said they really didn’t have much money any more to buy the things they used to and to do the things they used to do.”

Hannah Evans, who is pregnant with the fourth child of Maher’s
eldest son Lee, 22, also recalled Ms Brett speaking about the family’s financial difficulties.

The 22-year-old, who lives in Marthasville, Missouri, said: “Mike loaned us 200 dollars for Christmas. Lee’s mum came up to us when we were leaving the house and told us they couldn’t afford to give us the 200 dollars.

“She said we could take it and pay it back, or give it back right then.

“Sarah was working at the apartments where they lived in exchange for free rent.”

Maher – who also used the alias Stephen King during his time in the US – filed for bankruptcy in November 2010.

He is wanted for questioning by Suffolk police after he, and the Securicor van he was in, disappeared from outside Lloyds Bank in Hamilton Road, Felixstowe, in January 1993.
