Health minister Dan Poulter hailed a new state-of-the-art medical centre as the beacon for all future healthcare as he officially opened the £3.5million building.

The Grove Medical Centre in Felixstowe puts GPs, nurses, health visitors, school nurses and mental health specialists together under one roof, with the centre also having the ability for minor operations for which patients would normally travel to Ipswich.

Dr Poulter said the centre was a “fantastic new facility” and praised the team which had worked so hard to bring the project to fruition.

He said: “This is the model of care we want to see across Suffolk where not only GP services but other health services, such as mental health and health visitors, are all together on one site – integrated services and proper joined-up care.

“This is how the NHS should be – it’s the best of the NHS. We are very proud and lucky to have this in Suffolk.”

The edge-of-town centre replaces the old Central Surgery in Hamilton Road – deemed no longer fit for purpose – and will serve around 16,000 patients with enough capacity for future growth of the seaside town.

Facilities include 26 consultant rooms, as well as the small operating theatre.Bus routes have been changed to help people reach the building, which has ample parking and cycle racks.

Finance for its constuction included £870,000 from the sale of the old Bartlet Hospital – a consulting room has been named in the Bartlet’s honour – and a £157,000 grant from the Deanery towards GP training and consulting rooms.

Partner Stephen Feltwell, project leader for the development, said it had been a ten-year quest with two failed projects before the current site – suggested by town councillors Mike Stokell and Andy Smith – proved successful.

Dr Feltwell stressed that the centre was not taking away services from Felixstowe Community Hospital and wanted to provide additional clinics to those currently available.

He said: “We have now got the facilities for our patients’ needs and that our staff deserve. This has secured the future of primary care in our part of the town for many years to come.”
