Felixstowe/Brightlingsea: Sam Dorling delighted to be back behind the counter

Sam Dorling at The Crows Nest, Landgaurd point, Felixstowe.

IT is just four months since popular chef Sam Dorling left Felixstowe, bringing an end to her 13-year tenure at the Crow’s Nest.

The 46-year-old admitted she was sad to leave the burger van at the ship viewing area, as it made way for the new Landguard Visitor Centre.

But today, she is enjoying life back behind the counter after taking the helm of the Brightlingsea Watersports and Yacht Club cafe... and there have been some familiar faces visiting her.

She said: “It’s all hearty portions here and in the few weeks we’ve been open we’re already attracting some regular visitors and customers from Felixstowe have been in to wish me well.

“When possible I’m supporting local businesses, buying fish off the quayside and employing local people.”

Sam grew up in Great Bentley and commuted from Clacton to Felixstowe every day to open the Crow’s Nest.

During her time in the industry, she has taught at the Colchester Institute and even won an episode of the programme Ready Steady Cook.

Since taking over the cafe in Brightlingsea, home to the University of Essex’s watersport facility, she has kept the same work ethic, getting up bright and early to prepare food for the day ahead.

And she is confident she can build up a similar reputation that she enjoyed in Felixstowe.

She added: “We’ve spruced up the cafe and it’s nice and warm in here.

“I’ve got lots of plans for the forthcoming sailing season but, we’re here whatever the weather.”

  • It's so good to hear that such a hard working caring person such as Sam has been able to continue her good cook in' n Brightlingsea, so disappointed she has to, no was 'forced to' leave her well established plot at Landguard, Her Sunday morning bacon butties that we oft had while we were working within the Felixstowe Museum in the past 12 or so years, have been a serious loss. Still Landguard's loss is now to be Brightlingsea's gain. Bye for now Sam you are missed, see you soon in Essex. Thank you ...
