AFTER 19 years as a wanted man ‘Fast’ Eddie Maher was said to be “irate” when a police officer told him US authorities were looking for him, a court was told.

In an affidavit to the US District Court for the Western District of Missouri an FBI agent stated Maher was angry when he learned about the bureau’s interest in him. He is also alleged to have threatened to kill the person who contacted police.

Suffolk police have been keen to speak to the former security guard since he disappeared, at the same time a Securicor van containing £1million also disappeared from outside Lloyds Bank in Felixstowe in January 1993.

In the court documents which were filed during a hearing in Springfield, Missouri, yesterday, at which Maher appeared, special agent Jeffrey W Attwood revealed the background to Maher’s arrest.

The 56-year-old was detained at the rented apartment he shared with his wife Deborah Ann Brett in Ozark, south-west Missouri on Wednesday. The couple had been living together near Chelmsford when Maher went missing.

Mr Attwood stated Maher, who was living under his brother Michael Maher’s name, went to Nixa Police Department on Monday to post a bond for his son who had been arrested.

In the affidavit it is claimed that while Maher was at the police station he also made a complaint to an officer about one of his guns being allegedly stolen by his son’s wife.

The document states: “After making the report, an NPD officer allegedly told Maher that he was wanted in England, but that the officer would not arrest him.

“Maher’s son overheard what the NPD officer son, and asked Maher about it after they left the police station.

“Maher’s son said that Maher was irate. Maher told his son that they would have to leave again, and threatened to kill the person who tipped the police off about his identity.”

Mr Attwood also told the court Maher had also previously used the alias Stephen King, along with a false date of birth of April 17, 1951, when his real date of birth was June 2, 1955.

Maher is currently in custody on a charge of illegally possessing firearms. He is also being questioned on suspicion of having false identification documents and being an illegal immigrant.

At the end of yesterday’s hearing Maher was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on February 22.
