SNOW clearance work was taking place at Felixstowe port today – with Britain’s biggest container terminal closed due to the severe weather.
Port officials said rail and yard operations had been affected by the overnight snowfall and, for the safety of all port users, access to quayside areas was being restricted.
“Vehicles are being marshalled on site and will be processed through to operational areas as soon as it is safe to do so,” said a port spokesman.
“Some delays to hauliers are likely and customers may wish to consider re-scheduling their arrivals.
“The port is in the process of clearing the container lines and will endeavour to minimise any disruption caused.”
Up to four inches of snow fell across the Felixstowe peninsula creating picture-postcard scenes.
People were making the most of the weather with their sledges and going for walks, while snow on the beach failed to deter sea anglers keen to carry on enjoying their sport.
Main roads were passable but sideroads were treacherous.
Most shops in Hamilton Road opened for business as usual but there were a few closures due to staff not being able to reach work.
