Two women in their 60s have been taken to hospital after getting into difficulties while swimming off Cobbold’s Point at Felixstowe.
A spokesman for Thames Coastguard said an off-duty Police Community Support Officer reported it at 4.51pm.
After an urgent call was made to vessels in the area, the Harwich inshore lifeboat, the Felixstowe Coastguard rescue team and local rescue boat the Samphire rushed to help the women, who were 50 metres from shore.
One was suffering from hypothermia and had ingested seawater while the other was borderline hypothermic. They were taken to hospital by ambulance.
The Thames Coastguard spokesman said: “It’s very difficult to know what the circumstances were, but they obviously got out of their depth and were unable to swim back.”
He said there was an ebbing tide which may have been a reason why the women were not making any headway to shore.
