Flooding: Fire service called to 70 incidents near Suffolk/Essex border

Essex fire crews have been out to 70 flood-related incidents

Crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service have been busy rescuing people affected by the heavy rain.

Since 4am crews have been called out 70 times to flood-related incidents after a night of wet weather.

Haverhill and Saffron Walden areas have had some of the heaviest rain with schools shutting and dozens of roads difficult to pass.

Firefighters rescued 10 people and two dogs from a block of flats in Saffron Walden.

Crews have also been pumping water from flooded homes and rescuing motorists trapped in flood water.

Essex Police are urging drivers to take care on the roads that may be flooded over the next few days.

A spokesman said: “Drivers are advised to avoid using flooded roads wherever possible but if your journey is essential here are some important points to consider.

“If you come across a flooded road, you should only attempt to drive through if you are certain that it is not too deep.

“Many cars will start to float in as little as 12 inches of water. This can be extremely dangerous; as the wheels lose grip, and you will lose control - with the obvious risks and consequences.”

Drivers are advised not to drive through water that is deeper than the lowest part of the vehicle’s bodywork.
