Framlingham: Developer criticised for flouting rules and leaving a ‘muddy mess’

The developer behind a new care home in east Suffolk has come under fire for allegedly breaching its planning conditions and leaving a “very unpleasant mess” in the neighbouring area.
A number of Framlingham residents have complained about large vehicles blocking Fore Street and covering it with mud as they deliver construction materials for the Mills Meadow care home project.
Suffolk Coastal councillor Christopher Hudson said lots of people were “really cheesed off” by the breach of regulations, which forbid vehicles from entering or leaving the site between 8am and 8.30am and again from 3pm to 3.30pm.
Speaking on Friday, Mr Hudson said: “The whole length of Fore Street is covered in mud. I’ve had three residents raise it with me already and it’s happened at least five times previously.
“There’s mud and stones and all sorts and it really is a very unpleasant mess.
“They should be sticking to their management plan and none of this would have happened.”
Care UK has been developing Mills Meadow with its construction partner Castleoak since November.
When completed, it will form part of Care UK’s £60million investment in 10 new centres providing specialist dementia care in Suffolk.
John Irons, contracts manager of Casteloak, said work had been carried out to keep the area “as clean as possible” though it has been “severely hampered” by the weather.
“The last week or so has been very challenging due to the rain and we are going to do more to keep the road as clean as possible,” he said.
“By Friday, all the dirty earthwork will be complete.”
A Suffolk Coastal District Council spokesman said the complaints had been investigated by officers, who had been in touch with the developer.
“Whilst we recognise that the recent bad weather has made the situation worse, that is no excuse for not complying with the conditions,” the spokesman said.
“Our officers are talking to the developer to ensure they comply with the conditions under which they received planning approval.”
