Framlingham: Hopes grow for Ed Sheeran’s youth centre plans

Suffolk singer Ed Sheeran is reported to be finalising deals to create a youth and community centre for his home town.

Although Ed’s management has refused to comment on the suggestions, there are growing rumours in Framlingham that his plans to buy the town’s old police station are nearing completion.

Spadge Hopkins, of the Framlingham Area Youth Action Partnership (FAYAP), said: “As far as I know, it’s all being processed, so all being well it should be up and running when the paperwork is all signed.

“It’s potentially very positive news – it’s not a FAYAP project, it’s his own thing, so we’ve got to see what he wants from it.

“But whatever happens it’s got to be good for the young people of Framlingham.”

The Badingham Road site was sold by Suffolk Constabulary to the Mills Charity for £450,000 in 2010, when the officers moved to a joint base with the town’s firefighters.

The Framlingham and District Development Trust (FDDT) attempted to buy it from the charity to create a £1.7m community hall for the town.

However, the FDDT failed to meet the Christmas Day deadline last year to complete the purchase and the project stalled.

Ed was reported to have been alerted to the police station’s availability once the deal fell through and told a national newspaper in May that he was “really excited” about the project.

The former Thomas Mills High School student was formerly a member of FAYAP and played some of his first live music performances at its events, however there is currently no dedicated community centre in the town for similar youth groups or other organisations to use.

Christopher Hudson, one of Framlingham’s district councillors, said he was “over the moon” at the news Ed might be creating such a facility.

“I’m delighted that it’s going to move the project forward for the benefit of the town’s young people,” he added. “Even the rumours are positive.”

Mr Hudson said he hoped the facility could be used as a youth group and also believed the baptist church would be interested in using it.

The Mills Charity and Ed Sheeran’s management team declined to comment on the deal or the youth project.

  • Isn't it about time he learnt to play a full-size guitar? He could probably afford lessons now.

  • Let's hope this comes true. If so we have two great examples of philanthropy in the EADT today: Ed Sheeran and Tony Wheeler. Perhaps now some of the self-satisfied filthy rich among us will also be inspired to share their wealth.
