A 21-year-old Suffolk man has been issued with a curfew and community order after admitting burglary and theft from a Grade I listed church.

Jamie Corby pleaded guilty to both offences at Lowestoft Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday after being charged in connection with two incidents at St Michael’s Church in Framlingham.

Corby, of Fore Street, Framlingham, entered the church on Friday, February 7, when he stole a handbag containing a purse, cash, cards and a mobile phone.

He returned on Friday, February 28 and climbed over the vestry where he moved a cash box.

Magistrates issued Corby with a three-month curfew, between 10pm and 6am, and year-long community order.

Corby had also been arrested in connection with a burglary at the church on February 26, when an altar was burned. He was also accused of a break-in at the United Free Church, between February 27 and 28, when excrement was smeared across the door. He was not charged with either of these offences.
