Levi Hilden stole the Mercedes used to smash a hole in the wall of Potters in Station Road, from a house in Burstall shortly before the raid in October last year, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Extensive damage running into thousands of pounds was caused to the side wall of the station shop but all that was taken was cigarettes and tobacco worth £150, said Lori Tucker, prosecuting.

Hilden, 29, of Severn Road, Ipswich admitted three offences of burglary at Mulberry Hall, Burstall, Cherwell House, Burstall Lane, Sproughton and Potters. He also admitted stealing a Mercedes and an Audi during the burglary at Mulberry Hall, theft of a bike and possessing cannabis. All the offences took place between October 2-4 last year.

Jailing him for five years Judge Rupert Overbury said the Mercedes stolen from Mulberry Hall had been used as a “tool” to ram the wall of the garage. “You caused thousands of pounds of damage and you gained not very much at all,” said the judge,

Miss Tucker told the court that Mulberry Hall was broken into while the owners were asleep and in addition to the two cars a computer and a large amount dental equipment was stolen.

The Mercedes was used in the ram raid at Potters and the Audi, which was later found burnt out on a flyover near the A12, was seen leaving the premises after the incident.

Miss Tucker said gardening equipment valued at more than £2,000 was stolen from a shed at Cherwell House and a scramble bike was stolen from an isolated farmhouse at Creeting St Peter.

After Hilden’s arrest the stolen dental equipment, some of the stolen gardening equipment and the trail bike were all recovered.

Steven Dyble, for Hilden, said his client’s father, who was in poor health, ran a Christmas tree plantation and Hilden wanted to take over the business on his release from prison. “He wants to turn over a new leaf,” said Mr Dyble.

After today’s hearing Detective Inspector Nick Power said: “These were serious crimes committed over a short period of time where a business was disrupted and a home owner had the trauma of their home being broken into and valuable items being stolen from within.”
