Handel’s ceremonial music for the Water Music began this year’s concert in the Headmaster Porter Theatre.

John Hutchings, assistant director of music, said it was a “highly polished” performance of trumpets, horns, oboes, flutes, and strings, and set a high standard for the rest of the evening.

Among the other ensembles in the concert was Fletcher’s “Folk Suite”, which was given a sensitive rendition by the String Orchestra under Helen Orsler’s direction.

The concert band enlivened the mood with music from Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, the jazz band encouraged everyone that it’s “Hip To Be Square”, while the choir concluded proceedings with Chilcott and Mozart.

Also featuring in the successful concert was a showcase of the forthcoming production of “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum”, which will be staged in the Headmaster Porter Theatre between December 5 and 7.
