Demetri the cat is so big that some children mistake him for a dog.

And at a weight of 7.89kg he would be more comfortable with a dog flap than a cat flap at his home in Moreton Hall, Bury St Edmunds.

His owner Camille Ives, 35, said Demetri, who has the nickname ‘big lad,’ had always been “massive” – ever since she got him from a rescue centre in Norfolk.

She said as far as her and her husband Dave were aware he was a standard domestic short-haired cat.

“He’s well known among all of our friends for being massive,” she said. “I have had children meet him for the first time before and they say ‘dog’ because he’s so big. He’s more dog-sized than cat-sized, but he’s definitely a cat.

“I got him when he was six years old from Cats Protection in Norfolk, Downham Market, where we were living at the time. He was a rescue cat.”

Mrs Ives described Demetri, who weighed 7.2kg when she got him, as “big-boned,” saying he liked his food, but did not eat as much as one of her other cats.

“The vet at the most recent check last time said he had put on a tiny bit of weight, ‘but we are not worried about it’.”

She said he was a “prolific hunter,” adding his favourite catch was rabbit.

“When we first moved into our house he was catching rabbits all the time because it was a new estate and they hadn’t built most of it so it was fields. He caught four rabbits in one day,” she said.

She added another time he brought home a pheasant, but he struggled to get it through the cat flap.

But despite being a “killing machine,” she said Demetri was incredibly affectionate and loving towards his owners.

Domestic cats typically weigh between 4-5kg, but some breeds, such as the Maine Coon, can occasionally exceed 11kg.

However, Moreton Hall Veterinary Centre, where Demetri is a patient, said he was not the largest cat on their books in the area.
