Some of Suffolk’s top young gymnasts descended on an Ipswich school yesterday to showcase their best moves in the final of a countywide schools trampolining competition.

Organisers of the event, which took place at Stoke High School, in Maidenhall Approach, have declared the day a major success and were quick to praise the talented sportsmen and women.

The final was split into two age groups for under 14s and under 16s and saw about 80 pupils from schools across the county take part.

Gareth Craze, head of PE at Stoke High School, who helped with the organisation of the event, said: “It was very successful.

“We have been hosting this for the last five years and had very positive feedback from visiting teachers, judges and parents. It is a very successful competition which is held on an annual basis.

“Everybody enjoyed themselves and it was a good atmosphere.

“The standard of trampolining was significantly higher this year.”

Ipswich was well represented in the finals with Westbourne Academy, Copleston High School and St Joseph’s College, which won the under 16s competition, sending representatives.

Copleston’s A team came second in the under 16 section followed by King Edward VI School from Bury St Edmunds.

The under 14 event was won by East Bergholt High School, followed by King Edward VI in second and Copleston A in third.

Ali Furlong, School Games Organiser for Westbourne Academy, who runs the event on behalf of Suffolk Schools Gymnastic Association, said: “The standard this year was higher than ever and this was commented on by schools as well about how much the event improves year on year.

“Thanks as always to Trudy Sharman for her support with the judging and help with the event but also to the other judges on the day – this makes it so much easier having quality judges helping out.”

A prize was also handed out to the highest individual scorer, Elise Das, from King Edward VI, who was awarded an overall total of 52.9. She won the Lily Webster Trophy, in memory of the former Stowmarket high School pupil who died suddenly in 2012 and was a keen trampolinist.
