The chilly November skies over west Suffolk were lit up in a shower of red, white, blue and gold last night as the 46th annual Big Night Out Guy Fawkes celebrations got underway.

More than 10,000 people attended the event in the grounds of Long Melford Hall, all keen to feel the warmth of the giant bonfire and secure a front row view of the
stunning £11,500 pyrotechnic display, which was carefully choreographed and staged by Pains Fireworks.

With its roots dating back to the 15th century, Pains is the UK’s
longest established firework display company with a long-standing
association with the Big Night Out.

Last night’s 30-minute spectacle went off with a series of thunderous bangs as rockets soared into the darkness, delighting spectators young and old. The display also included carousel fireworks – the current craze in the pyrotechnic industry.

Last year, the Big Night Out only managed to pull in 5,000 spectators – just a quarter of the usual 20,000 who flock to the much-loved bonfire night event.

As a result, the event only just broke even and the organising committee, Project 7, was unable to donate to local charities as it had done the previous 44 years.

But speaking at the Big Night Out last night, committee chairman Andrew Hagger, said: “I felt really sorry for the charities last year because one or two of them relied on our donations.

“But this year is looking a lot more promising – numbers are up and the treasurer has a big smile on his face.”
