Pupils and teachers marked the 60th birthday of their school in Ipswich by holding a 1950s party.

Students and members of staff at Castle Hill Infant School, in Dryden Road, had fun dressing up in 1950s attire and learning about the culture of that decade during the commemorative celebration yesterday afternoon.

And to mark the occasion, they formed a giant 60 on the school field.

Headteacher Eileen Allpress described the day as both “information and fun” for the youngsters.

She said: “Castle Hill Infant School opened in 1954 and for our 60th celebration the children have been finding out about the culture of that time.

“They have listened to the music of the 1950s and found out about the clothes of the time.”

She added: “They have learned about the education and classroom experience of the Castle Hill of 1954.

“The children have really made an effort to dress in the style of the time. It was a great celebratory day for both staff and children.”

Firefighters have attended a “rescue” in Ipswich.

Three residents at an Essex care home suffered smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in a bedroom causing extensive damage to the building.

Firefighters have been called to a blaze in a residential street in Ipswich.

An appeal has been launched to find an Essex man wanted in connection with a failure to appear at court.

The University of Essex is among more than 60 institutions set for strike action next month over pensions – however staff at the University of Suffolk are not expected to take part.

The care received by patients was assessed by an independent panel

A reality TV star was caught reading about horses while driving along a Suffolk road.
