Runners get splashed with powder during Headway's Colour 5K in Ardleigh on Saturday, 14 June.

The Ardleigh showground resembled a Skittles factory on Saturday afternoon as hundreds of people took part in the Colchester Colour Run.

The unique and fun-filled event was in aid of Headway Essex, with £5 from every adult entry going to the charity which helps those with brain injuries.

During the 5k race, runners were splattered with paint and specially-designed powder to create a riot of colour in the showground.

The race kicked off at noon but speed wasn’t the important factor as participants could walk, jog or run the course.

Each lap of the ground was one kilometre and at the end of every lap runners had to make their way through colour zones where eager ‘colour bandits’ would pelt them with powder and paint.

Every lap was finished with a different colour: after one kilometre participants ran through the red zone, after two it was the orange zone, after three it was the green zone, followed by the blue zone after four kilometres and the purple zone at the finish line.

Finally participants took part in a colour extravaganza where everybody threw paint powder into the air to create a huge rainbow cloud.

All runners were dressed in a plain white t-shirt to begin the race, which acted as a blank canvas on which the masterpiece of colour would be splashed.
