Daily reading sessions at an east Suffolk school have been welcomed for creating an“all pervading sense of excitement” among students.

Saxmundham Free School’s Everyone Reads in Class (ERIC) sessions were launched before Christmas as part of a “big push” on reading.

Jackie Spink, head of English, said there was “huge correlation” between students who read independently and those who achieve academic success, which the school was keen to impress on students.

“The children are beginning to give us really positive feedback,” she said.

“Students who never really read before are talking about books with friends – there’s an all pervading sense of excitement.”

Merlyn Mitchell Cotts, a parent and staff member at the school, said ERIC had helped one of her sons to enjoy reading for the first time ever.
