Suffolk’s magnificent heavy horses displayed their power and poise during a celebration of the famous breed.

The annual Punch Run and Gathering drew crowds to the Suffolk Punch Trust, in Hollesley, over the weekend.

Saturday saw the arrival of classic cars, craft stalls and a vintage market to the site near Woodbridge, followed by an evening of live music provided by Suffolk band Flaming Cheek.

On Sunday, a selection of vintage vehicles, cars, tractors, buses, lorries and motorcycles lined the grounds of the Trust, which is dedicated to preserving the Punch breed and ensuring the skills needed to handle the horses survive.

Visitors were also treated to displays of commercial, military and off-road bikes, sharing the site for the day with the Trust’s gentle, giant horses in residence.

The sappers of 23 Engineer Regiment (Air Assault), based at nearby Rock Barracks, in Sutton Heath, took along a selection of their vehicles, and visitors were also provided musical entertainment from Jeremiah Marques, stalls and food throughout the day.

Trust general manager Sue van der Meulen said: “We’ve had a really lovely day, the bulk of which was pretty dry and we avoided the worst of the rain.

“It has been a really happy event with lots of visitors. The horse element went extremely well.”
