Barn owl in flight

Barn owls are with out doubt among the nations favourite birds, according to wildlife enthusiast Brian Holland

Mr Holland, of Ipswich, has been out watching this mystical creatures this week with his photographer wife, Maragret.

he said: “They seem to exude a magical aura as they glide and flap slowly and silently on rounded wings quartering the rough pasture hunting for food mainly field voles.

“When we watch them they lift us to another level of wonderment by their sheer understated beauty.”

Dispelling a common myth, he continued: “While owls are generally thought to be birds of the night these will fly in daylight, often late afternoons, and I urge everyone who sees them to stop and watch in wonderment as they hover and then swoop into the dense rough pasture to secure a meal.”

The couple have also caught the goosander on film this week.

“Goosanders often frequent local ponds streams and rivers during the winter,” said Mr Holland. “But breed in the uplands and, strangely, not on the ground but in holes in trees.”

The ducklings, when hatched, cast themselves out of the hole and literally bounce when they hit the ground. Quite amazing.”
