Gallery: There could be one last spell of summery weather on the way – but a week of cooler temperatures to get through first

16:19 18 August 2014

Don’t ditch that sunscreen just yet.

Although the weather has taken a turn for the cooler with two weeks of the school summer holidays still left, there may be another chance to get one last use out of the barbecue.

Temperatures have certainly dropped since the mid to high twenties (high seventies in Fahrenheit) of the beginning of the month and they won’t be recovering this week.

But thunderstorms which caused flooding across parts of the county last week are unlikely to become regular events - see our gallery for examples of just how changeable the weather has been.

The forecast for this week predicts temperatures in the mid to high teens with occasional showers and moderate winds making it feel cooler still.

And it is unlikely to be sunbathing-on-the-beach weather next weekend for the late summer Bank Holiday, although it is still likely to be warm and dry enough to go out and about.

Dan Holley from Weatherquest said winds from the north were responsible for the dip in temperature.

“It’s a similar pattern (this week) because of a deep area of low pressure over Scandinavia.

“We have got a northerly wind which is bringing air down from the Arctic. It’s quite breezy at the moment which adds a chill to the air.”

Howeve,r long range forecasts suggest there could be an upturn in the weather at the start of next month.

“Next week overall the winds will be coming in from the west so that is always slightly warmer anyway but there could still be some rain,” Mr Holley added.

“The first week of September is looking like a return to something a bit drier and warmer.”

The reason for this would be because the wind will instead be coming up from the south which often brings milder air.
