Suffolk women are being urged to gear up for a charity bike ride to coincide with the arrival in Bury St Edmunds of the world’s best female cyclists.

Riders in the Women on Wheels charity cycle challenge will race off on the same day the inaugural Women’s Tour reaches its climax in the town on Sunday, May 11.

The charitable cyclists looking to emulate the likes of Team GB Olympic medallists Laura Trott and Dani King can choose from either a five or 20-mile course, starting in Bury’s Charter Square and winding through the west Suffolk countryside before concluding at the Abbey Gardens.

All funds from the event will go to St Nicholas Hospice Care, with Mildenhall Cycling Club and the West Suffolk Wheelers and Triathlon Club working with organisers Cycle Suffolk and supporters Suffolk Sport and Abbeycroft Leisure to make the event a fantastic fundraiser.

Joseph Young, from Cycle Suffolk, said: “Sunday, May 11, will be a celebration of all things cycling and in particular women’s cycling.

“We hope Women on Wheels will become an annual event and encourage people who have not been on a bike for a while to have a go. The routes are designed to be an achievable distance and the event will be friendly. There is no competition and it will be a great starter ride.”

St Edmundsbury Borough Council deputy leader, councillor Sara Mildmay-White, said she was looking forward to welcoming participants of the charity cycle ride in the Abbey Gardens on the same day that hundreds of international female cyclists arrive on Bury’s Angel Hill.

She added: “This promises to be a truly memorable event and I hope as many people as possible are inspired to take part.

“It will be supportive, enjoyable, and a chance to discover the excellent cycle path network around Bury St Edmunds.

“I am proud that the town is hosting the prestigious Women’s Tour, but I will be cheering every person crossing their finishing lines, charity cyclists and international stars alike.”

The charity rides start at 8am and 8.30am respectively, with registration from 7am. It costs £10 to enter – free for under 16s who are accompanied by a paying adult – with participants receiving a goody bag. There will be a limited number of loan bikes available and a pre-event maintenance class.
