Young recruits this morning awoke to the last of three activity-filled days at a Suffolk army base.

Children aged 10-16 have been camped at Rock Barracks, the home of 23 Engineer Regiment (Air Assault), near Woodbridge, since the beginning of the week for Operation Camouflage.

The joint venture between Suffolk Coastal and local armed forces sees youngsters gain experience and work as a team in a positive environment.

Run by the Suffolk Coastal Active Communities Team and funded by the Suffolk Armed Forces Community Covenant, the project takes place during the summer holidays.

Soldiers based at Rock Barracks have been on hand to help out during the three days.

Julia Catterwell, from the Suffolk Coastal Community Safety Partnership, said: “It’s been going really well. We’ve been visited by MP Therese Coffey and council members including Colonel Rae Leighton, Suffolk’s armed forces commissioner. They met the children and had a look round some of the activities.”

One of the volunteers helping out is Solomon Jacobs, 14, from Woodbridge, who has also taken part in Operation Camouflage in previous years. The Farlingaye High School pupil said: “It really helps by providing things to do in the holidays. I found it helped me with me with confidence and making new friends.”
