Thirteen students from Great Cornard are among the first to complete a new qualification aimed at boosting their chances of a university place.

The EPQ – or extended project qualification – was introduced at Thomas Gainsborough School last year. Year 12 and 13 students pick a topic that ties in with one of their study areas or interests and complete a 10,000 or 5,000 word essay and presentation. Helen Yapp, deputy headteacher, said eight of the first batch to complete the EPQ had achieved A – A* grades. The EPQ will count towards points required for university entry.
