And last Monday the dream of Marjorie Archer came true.

Mrs Archer, who now lives at Prince of Wales residential home in Ipswich but spent much of her married life in Grundisburgh, celebrated her big birthday on Monday with her friends and family.

Her daughter, Yvonne, had organised for the bells at the St Mary’s Church to ring in celebration, and had invited villagers to gather at the church.

Yvonne said the turn-out was “totally overwhelming”.

Mrs Archer was born in Boyton in 1914. Her father was a shepherd and her mother was a housewife.

Yvonne said: “My mother was often the sole carer for her brothers and sister. She was 14 when her young brother was born.

“She spent the majority of her life caring for them, and has outlived them all. She is a very caring and placid woman. I’ve only ever known her to lose her temper once, and I ran for my life!”

Mrs Archer married George in 1938 and had two daughters, Yvonne and Maureen.

She now has two grandsons and three great-grandsons. Her husband died in 1971.
