VOLUNTEERS turned out in force to plant an orchard to honour the memory of a village stalwart.

People in Hacheston, near Framlingham, wanted to commemorate the life of Tony Dyer, who died in July last year.

He made a huge contribution to the community and played a major role in building the village hall in 2008.

As a result the village hall committee decided to plant an orchard in his memory, asking the Suffolk Traditional Orchards Group for advice. On Saturday around 40 villagers – young and old – planted the 60 trees, all of which are varieties of traditional fruit.

Organiser Geoff Woodard said: “It was a great village occasion and everyone was happy to help those who were less able to dig holes.”
