South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court

A manager at a Suffolk bank has appeared in court charged with defrauding three clients of sums totalling more than £17,000.

Daniel Brazier, of The Street, Capel St Mary, is accused of three counts of fraud by abuse of position by taking money from customer accounts over a three-month period.

During a hearing at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court the 24-year-old was said to have been branch manager at Santander in Market Place, Hadleigh, at the time of the alleged offences.

One of the allegations is that while occupying the position of branch manager in which he was expected to safeguard or not act against the financial interests of a man and wife, Brazier abused that position by intending to make a gain of £13,000 for himself.

The alleged offence is said to have taken place between November 23, 2012, and February 28, 2013.

The second charge is of a similar nature, except that £3,000 was allegedly taken from a woman whose interests Brazier should have been safeguarding.

The details of the charge states this occurred between January 1, 2013, and February 28, 2013.

The third accusation is that Brazier abused his position by defrauding another woman of £1,265.58.

This is said to have taken place between February 6, 2013, and February 18, 2013.

Prosecutor Nicky Leppard said due to the amount of money involved she would be asking the magistrates to commit the case to Ipswich Crown Court as it was not suitable for summary disposal.

John Hughes, representing Brazier, agreed.

No plea was entered on Brazier’s behalf during the hearing, which lasted around five minutes.

Magistrates told Brazier his next appearance would be at the town’s crown court for a preliminary hearing on January 28.

He was also told his trial window was likely to be between June 2 and July 11.

At the end of the hearing Brazier was released on conditional bail.

After the hearing a spokeswoman for Santander clarified Brazier’s position while he was with the bank.

She said; “Daniel Brazier was not a member of Santander staff, but a member of Santander’s Hadleigh Agency staff.”
