A MODEL and former Miss Great Britain who grew up in Suffolk has regained her confidence after beating a habit she was completely unaware of developing.
Emma Spellar was oblivious to an unconscious compulsion which had been steadily changing her appearance and may have eventually blemished her modelling career.
The 29-year-old, originally from Halesworth, was among many unfamiliar with the sleeping disorder bruxism until a doctor suggested it may be changing the shape of her most valuable asset.
Emma was involuntarily grinding or clenching her teeth while asleep, giving her jaw a square appearance as a result of the muscles being overworked.
The former Bungay High School pupil, who was crowned Miss Great Britain in 2004, looked into non-surgical treatment options and was recommended to cosmetic dentist and facial aesthetics practitioner Dr Bob Khanna, who offered a surprising solution to Emma’s problem.
She said: “I didn’t realise my angular jaw could actually be softened. I have always felt self-conscious about my look when smiling.
“Dr Bob explained that I may clench or grind my teeth at night as the muscles were overtly prominent.”
A dilute form of Botox was injected to relax Emma’s facial muscles and soften her jaw line. She said: “I can’t believe how much happier I am with my looks. My face appears much slimmer and less puffy. From looking back at pictures I realised how square my jaw was and now it looks far more feminine. My confidence is so much higher and I love smiling for pictures as well as posing.”
